First settlements in the Bonn area can be traced back to Germanic times followed by Roman settlements, making Bonn one of the oldest cities in Germany. The best known son of the city is probably Ludwig van Beethoven who was born here in 1770, but many other artists like Robert Schumann and August Macke are connected to Bonn as well.

After serving as residence for the Prince-electors of Cologne it gained considerable importance by becoming the capital of the newly founded Federal Republic of Germany in 1949 and serving as seat of the government up to 1999. After parliament moved to Berlin the city was not left empty, six of the nation’s government institutions retain their main seat in Bonn and the Berlin/Bonn-Law states that there must not be more federal employees in Berlin than there are in Bonn.

Bonn and its surrounding area is spotted with beautiful castles and palaces, e.g. the Kurfürstliche Schloss (Palace of the prince-electors) which serves as main building of Bonn University, the Poppelsdorfer Schloss or even the rococo-style building of the Old Town Hall. Unfortunately you won’t be able to sleep in any of these illustrious buildings but with you can easily book cheap apartments and friendly rooms in Bonn. Bonn Minster
Built in the 11th century on the foundations of a Germanic ritual place the Romanic body of the Bonn Minster was expanded in the 13th century in the Gothic style and remains an icon of the city to this day.

In contrast with the Romanic and Gothic elements of the building the interior is notable for its baroque design, especially two marble alters and a bronze statue of St. Helena. The four big bells in the bell tower are of special interest: they all stem from the same bell founder Martin Legros and were cast in 1756. They are some of the few baroque bells having survived both World Wars where bells were threatened to be melted down.
Federal Art Hall
The museum also known by its full name "Art and Exhibition Hall of the Federal Republic of Germany" is one of the most visited museums in Germany. It is financed not by the city of Bonn but by the state and federal states. It is supposed to represent Germany’s rich and growing culture and connect it to art and culture of other countries.

Changing exhibitions present all areas of science and technology, culture and cultural history while additional rooms are used for concerts and conferences. The surrounding grounds offer access to many installations relating to historical events and/or the Federal Republic of Germany.
Post Tower
Apart from several federal government departments Bonn remains the seat of many formerly state owned companies like Deutsche Post DHL (German Postal Service DHL). With 41 floors and 162,5 meters height the Post Tower is the highest building in Bonn. Elaborate technology allows for energy saving maintenance while the material glass (used for almost all walls, floors, doors) symbolizes the Openness of the company culture.

The facade of the building can be used as giant luminous advertising through the use of RGB-floodlights. At Christmas these display a Christmas tree, for big events a logo is displayed like a football during the 2006 FIFA World Championship.
